2022 USE CASE LoRaWAN -Enabled Solution Improves Animal Tracking and Health on Large Farms TRACKING CATTLE OVER LONG DISTANCES WITH LoRaWAN On cattle farms in South America, livestock are often away for weeks at a time, roaming over large distances. Farmers need a simple, effective and affordable way to track the location and health of their animals – so they can quickly locate them when needed and respond to any issues. Caravan Tech developed the Caravan Cattle Monitoring Solution to provide the precise location of cattle at all times, as well as data on the animal's current state of health. The Caravan Cattle Monitoring Solution ensures communication and connectivity over long distances with LoRaWAN . The solution runs on YEAP!'s LoRaWAN Network, which is powered by OrbiWise's OrbiWAN LoRaWAN Network Server (LNS). REAL-TIME CATTLE HEALTH DATA The Caravan Cattle Monitoring Solution comprises two elements: an ear tag with a LoRaWAN radio link and GPS; and a bolus with a Bluetooth link to the ear tag that resides in the cow's stomach. The collected data is delivered to the farmer via a user- friendly computer, tablet or handset app. Measured data includes: • Location (via GPS) • Animal temperature • Food & water intake • Motion information LoRaWAN FOR UNBEATABLE CONNECTIVITY AND COVERAGE When Caravan Tech, an Argentinian smart agriculture solutions provider, was developing its innovative cattle tracking and monitoring solution, it needed a low-power communications link that would provide connectivity across a wide rural area with diverse topography.
