Relay FAQ
5. Is LoRaWAN relay visible to LoRaWAN gateways?
A LoRaWAN relay is seen by the gateway as a standard LoRaWAN end-device. No update needs to be
performed on gateway to operate with a relay.
6. With which networks is LoRaWAN relay compatible?
LoRaWAN relay is compatible with all types of LoRaWAN networks: public, private, hybrid, and community.
7. How many relays can be managed under a relay device?
Relays are single hop, so they cannot be managed under another relay.
8. Why isn't an RF repeater sufficient?
A simple RF repeater will draw too much power and will not be as secure as a LoRaWAN end-device.
9. Can an end-device be managed at the same time by a relay and gateway?
Yes, an end-device uplink can be received by both a relay and a gateway; the network server will decide
whether it will send a downlink through a relay or gateway.
10. What are the differences between LoRaWAN stack with and without relay?
Relay feature is built on top of a class A LoRaWAN stack, leveraging device features like Wake-On Radio
(WOR) and Channel Activity Detection (CAD).
11. Is there an open-source reference implementation of a LoRaWAN stack with Relay add-on
already available? Is there a LoRaWAN network server already offering Relay feature?
Not yet. The development has been started and is in progress. An open-source LoRaWAN stack with Relay
add on implementation will follow soon.
12. By which release of the LoRaWAN protocol is relay supported?
