2023 CASE STUDY TOTALEnergies Eliminates Downtime Using TWTG's NEON Vibration Sensors SITUATION One of the leading oil and gas companies in the world, TOTALEnergies is a French-based multi-energy company with 25 refineries running 24/7 across the globe. It is essential for them to have a complete overview of the current operational status of all their assets to maintain an efficient and safe environment. CHALLENGE A key challenge was to manage the thousands of items of rotating equipment installed on each site. These assets include pumps, gearboxes and fans, and static equipment with resonance issues. Historically, assets were monitored at intervals, often monthly, with manual vibration measurement to verify that an asset was correctly functioning and possibly detect failures at an early stage. During this snapshot, vibrations are measured over a broad spectrum, and analysed by experts to determine whether further action is needed. While this process helps to manage unexpected downtime, it has several downsides. It is extremely labour intensive and substantial gaps between snapshots may not catch all potential issues in time, risking possible catastrophic failure taking place in between the checks being carried out. SOLUTION Total Refinery Antwerp in Belgium tested Netherlands-based TWTG's NEON Vibration Sensors to address the typical downsides of vibration measurement. NEON Vibration Sensors installed within the pump installation send an RMS (Root Mean Square) velocity value at 15-minute intervals, providing insights into the overall condition of the asset - a significant upgrade from monthly monitoring. It also provides full FFT (Fast Fourier Transform Algorithm) measurement for deeper analytics, giving full visibility of the ongoing status of assets in the field. After comparing these measurements, it was apparent something unusual was happening. Data analysis showed that 'over- lubrication' occurred that could cause long-term machinery damage. BENEFITS TotalEnergies can now leverage RMS and advanced FFT data gathered wirelessly through LoRaWAN ® , making continuous monitoring economically feasible. TWTG's NEON Vibration Sensors improve operational safety and efficiency, reducing the need for unnecessary field inspections when sensors indicate all levels are fine. Teams now only spend time on the assets with actual problems, saving on costly downtime.
