However, the Russia (Sanctions) (EU Exit) (Amendment) (No.14)
Regulations 2022 made provision for that ban on Russian coal to come into
force on 10 August 2022, in line with requisite EU measures.
In March 2022 the Government indicated that it would look to end the UK's
import of Russian gas, which, at the time, made up only 4% of UK supply.

On 28 October the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office
subsequently announced that, from 1 January 2023, the UK would ban all
imports of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG).

That ban is enacted by the
Russia (Sanctions) (EU Exit) (Amendment) (No.15) Regulations 2022, which
were laid before Parliament on 28 October 2022. Irrespective of the ban, the
UK has not imported any Russian gas since the conflict began.

In February 2023 the Government announced import bans on a further 140
goods, including iron and steel products processed in third countries.

Oil embargo
On 8 March the Prime Minister announced that the UK would phase out
Russian oil imports by the end of 2022.

Russian imports of oil account for
8% of the UK's total demand.

The then Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy,
Kwasi Kwarteng, provided more detail in a statement to Parliament on 9
March 2022. The import ban on Russian-origin oil and oil products is enacted
by the Russia (Sanctions) (EU Exit) (Amendment) (No.14) Regulations 2022, as
amended by the Russia (Sanctions) (EU Exit) (Amendment) (No.16)
Regulations 2022, which were laid before Parliament on 3 November 2022.
