Ways to network in college. 1 Learning how to network could be a critical factor in connecting with others in your field of interest and lead to career advice and possible job opportunities. While finding the time to network as a student may be difficult, it is important to take advantage of opportunities to develop your soft skills and build relationships with experienced individuals. Look for a variety of ways to expand your network on campus. Be involved on campus Joining clubs or groups on campus allows you to get involved with students and faculty that you may not work with on a daily basis. Other students may be in a different year of school or a different major, which provides an opportunity to practice team building and networking skills. Making connections with others who have similar interests as you may also lead to future opportunities in your professional career. Visit your career center Your career center is available to support your networking and job search journey by providing a variety of resources, including resume review, interview practice, and an alumni network. It's common for the career center to keep a list of alumni who are willing to speak with current students about their career and company. This can provide an opportunity to meet someone with a similar background who's working in your desired career. Additionally, you will network with and get to know those who work in your school's career center. Attend career fairs Career fairs often happen annually on college campuses and provide an opportunity to meet professionals in your desired field or potentially at your desired company. This is a great opportunity to practice presenting yourself in a professional manner and showcase your knowledge and communication skills. You can also continue networking after the event by sending thank you emails to the representatives you spoke with. Connect online LinkedIn is a popular networking site that allows you to stay connected with professionals you have met or hope to learn more about. Be sure your information is up to date, including your profile picture, job experience, interests, and qualifications. When connecting with new people or those you have previously interacted with, having this information updated will inform or remind them of your goals. Send emails Email is a convenient way to introduce yourself to a distant network connection. Within your emails, explain who you are and why you are reaching out—whether it's to schedule a coffee chat or gain career advice. Also, be sure to mention your mutual connection and thank them for taking the time to speak with you. This will help develop the relationship and leave a good first impression.
