2023 USE CASE Structural Health Monitoring of Cable-Stayed Bridge with LoRaWAN ® SITUATION Wireless Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of cable-stayed bridges requires sophisticated and reliable sensor systems. These monitor the structural health of the bridge by detecting structural damage and evaluating structural performance. This monitoring data can then be used to modify a finite element model of internal force. A sensor system with a wide frequency range is required for Structural Health Monitoring. The system should be able to: • Measure the tension of the cables • Monitor pylons, cables, and decks • Recognize changes in these parameters Once a system has been chosen, any existing wired sensor network needs to be replaced with a wireless network with the corresponding capabilities. BENEFITS The solution has a number of benefits, including: • Cost-saving of more than 50% • Increased efficiency in the monitoring process • Optimized maintenance scheduling and determination of serviceability CHALLENGE The main issue with current wired Structural Health Monitoring networks is that they are too expensive to install and maintain and take a lot of time to build. As a result, there is a critical need to replace these systems with robust and less expensive wireless sensor networks. SOLUTION To address this challenge, Dongil Engineering Consultants Co. and TEKTELIC have created a wireless solution that enables long-term monitoring of cable-stayed bridges. For the system, Dongil Engineering Consultants developed a smart sensor node that can collect and process signals from various sensors. The data is transmitted using TEKTELIC KONA Macro IoT Gateways for LoRaWAN ® . KONA Macro IoT Gateways are a cost-effective and compact LoRaWAN ® gateway – able to answer a long- existing challenge in the civil engineering sphere. To organize the Structural Health Monitoring system on a cable-stayed bridge, the gateways are deployed right to the bridge stays and walls.
