IPv6 LoRaWAN Adaptation Layer FAQ
• libschc: a project by Bart Moons from Ghent University. The project uses C language and
is still under development. The library has a dual license, the GNU General Public License v3.0
and a commercial license.
Commercial implementations are available for both the end-device and SCHC gateway.
18. Is it possible to have SCHC only on the end device (and not necessarily on the server side
as well)?
The SCHC architecture requires implementations on both the end-device and the server side (SCHC
Gateway). Compression+fragmentation is applied on the transmit side, decompression+reassembly is
applied on the receive side. Therefore, some form of a SCHC implementation is always needed on the
server side. Furthermore, for bidirectional communication, both sides need to implement both
compression/fragmentation and decompression/reassembly.
19. What are the ongoing and future developments of SCHC?
The IETF LPWAN Working Group is currently working on the following items
• ICMPv6 processing. This will include how to compress the ICMPv6 headers of course,
but also new features such as proxy operation: to an Echo Request message coming from an
unconstrained network, a SCHC gateway could answer with an Echo Reply on behalf of the End
Device, saving the End Device the cost of a round-trip over the constrained network.
• more ongoing developments of SCHC that are not directly relevant to LoRaWAN.
20. How can I certify SCHC over LoRaWAN?
• LoRaWAN end-devices:
The LoRa Alliance certification tool LCTT provides the ability to certify the IPv6 over LoRaWAN
Adaptation Layer.
To effectively certify an end-device, it is required to follow the LoRa-Alliance certification
process.
Note: Upper layer protocols using IPv6 over LoRaWAN adaptation layer may require additional
certification processes.
