2023 USE CASE Codepoint Trackers Enable Full Asset Monitoring with LoRaWAN PROTECTING GOODS IN TRANSIT From perishable foods and medicines to electronics, millions of items are shipped across the globe every day. While most reach their destinations safely and on time, many disappear or are damaged in transit. For the companies that own these assets, tracking and monitoring the condition of their goods can significantly reduce costs associated with loss and damage. There are many tracking devices available. However, most rely on GPS and so require satellite connection. As a result, they are not able to penetrate container boxes or other obstacles. In addition, most tracking devices focus on just location tracking, lacking the capabilities to monitor temperature and transport conditions. The solution is a new LoRaWAN -based tracker series developed by Codepoint Technologies. LoRaWAN -ENABLED TRACKERS Codepoint trackers operate on private LoRaWAN networks, such as Senet, and public networks operated by companies like Helium. The trackers include integrated sensors to deliver a more complete view of an item's location and condition. • LoRaWAN connectivity delivers exact location tracking, even within shipping containers, trucks or indoors • Temperature sensors indicate temperature fluctuations • Shock/impulse sensors indicate if an asset was mishandled or dropped If the trackers are unable to connect to a LoRaWAN network, they store location, temperature, and shock/impact data; and then upload it as soon as a connection becomes available. REDUCING DAMAGE, LOSS, AND EMISSIONS When companies ship large volumes of products, it can be useful to see how the items are handled during the journey. This enables the company to identify any points in the journey where damage tends to occur and adjust shipping routes and processes to reduce damage or loss. In addition, by assessing real-time, near real-time and historical data, a company can analyze transport routes to minimize transport time, costs, and emissions. THE BENEFITS OF LORAWAN Codepoint chose LoRaWAN for its trackers for several reasons: • Low-cost: Existing LoRaWAN networks reduce the cost of coverage and data transfer • Size: The trackers can be small, no larger than a credit card • Battery life: Low-power consumption ensures trackers can run for months without battery change • Coverage: Private and public LoRaWAN networks ensure wide coverage • Two-way communication: The devices can be modified in use to change settings, such as when data is uploaded As well as shipping items, the trackers can also be used for other movable assets, such as e-scooters and luggage trolleys.
