2022 USE CASE
Using LoRaWAN
®
to
Continuously and Remotely
Monitor Dementia Patients
SITUATION
A huge percentage of people with dementia will wander at
some point during their disease progression. This can
pose serious risks, such as becoming lost, injured, or
exposed to harsh weather conditions.
There is a need for continuous condition and location
tracking of dementia patients to keep them safe and
provide family members and caregivers peace of mind.
BENEFITS
The partnership between CareBand and TEKTELIC is
enabling public health organizations, senior living
communities, and families to ensure quality of care
and safety for dementia patients.
SOLUTION
CareBand and TEKTELIC have created a solution
based on LoRaWAN
technology that provides
caregivers with real-time data to monitor the
location and neuropsychiatric behavior of dementia
patients. The solution automatically alerts the
caregiver of any acute changes in condition to
vastly improve safety for the dementia patient and
avoid costly hospitalizations.
The solution includes an armband worn by the
patient, TEKTELIC KONA Micro Gateways for
LoRaWAN
and the CareBand dementia
monitoring platform. Together, these enable
healthcare providers and family members to quickly
locate the patient, address any condition changes,
and measure the efficiency of drugs and therapies.
CHALLENGE
The main challenge when monitoring dementia patients
manually is the time demands it puts on family
members and health specialists. For monitoring to be
constant, they must spend all their time with the
patients, which impedes their ability to do other
important daily activities and tasks.
