Protecting Timeless Artifacts with IoT Technology Enabled by LoRaWAN SITUATION The museum industry is facing new challenges in the 21 st century. Some of the main concerns of customers are how museums can be more inclusive, diverse, engaging, and relevant to their needs and interests. Museums also need to adapt to changing technologies and the expectations of their audiences, while preserving cultural heritage and timeless artifacts. The integration of IoT devices into museums can provide invaluable information to building operators and facility managers, so they can control environmental conditions and safely preserve the artifacts and works of art stored there. BENEFITS Conserv selected LoRaWAN ® as its primary connectivity technology because of its: • Long range • Low-power capabilities • Impressive indoor penetrative coverage to collect and transmit data • Low operating expenses The project demonstrates how museums can leverage IoT technology to enhance their visitor experience and education. 2023 USE CASE SOLUTION One example of how museums are innovating and addressing indoor environmental challenges is the collaboration between TEKTELIC Communications and Conserv, a US provider of environment monitoring sensors and software. The project enables museums to protect timeless artifacts by using LoRaWAN ® -enabled Smart Room sensors to monitor temperature, humidity, light, motion, and vibration. The data is shared via TEKTELIC KONA Micro Gateways for LoRaWAN ® . This solution enables museums to preserve their collections more effectively, provides real-time data, and alerts museum staff of any issues automatically. This can lead to irreversible damage to valuable items on display and in storage, putting the cultural legacy of a country or artist at risk. In addition, solutions require considerable investments, which many institutions, museums, archives, science centers, galleries, and other organizations cannot afford.
