Following much prayer and discernment, Elias has accepted a position as Director of Catholic Edu- cation for the Archdiocese of Portland. "I am grateful for the confidence and unwavering support Archbishop Samuel J. Aquila and his team have placed in me as Superintendent these past six years. I leave a better man, a more faithful follower of the Lord, and a stronger leader, thanks to all the Lord has blessed me and my family with as members of this com- munit y," says Elias. Keith Parsons, COO of the Arch- diocese of Denver, acknowledges that change is often challenging, but there is no greater fruit for a commu- nit y than to see one of its own sent forth on mission to take the Gospel and the mission of the Church to where it is needed. Carmelite sisters celebrate 20 years at Sts. Peter and Paul parish in Wheat Ridge BY MARY FARROW O n October 15, the feast day of renowned Car- melite nun St. Teresa of Avila, the parish of Sts. Peter and Paul in Wheat Ridge cele- brated 20 years of having the Carmelite Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Los Angeles serving at their school and parish. For the occasion, the parish celebrated a Mass, followed by a reception, alumni homecom- ing, and open house at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic STEM School. Fr. James K. Goggins V.F., pastor of Sts. Peter and Paul said that he asked the sisters to come to the parish and school in 1999. "At that time, Sr. Rosario Therese, O.C.D. responded, 'If it is God's will, it will happen.' Without a doubt, her words were prophetic!" The first set of sisters came in 2003. Longtime Notre Dame parishioner turns 100 - and she still walks to church! BY KEVIN J. JONES D evout Catholic, Eleanor Weil turned 100 years old in October. She's been going to southwest Denver's Notre Dame Cath- olic Church ever since it started. Her son David was even an altar boy at the church 's first Christmas Mass after it opened in 1957. Eleanor has lived in her home in Denver's Harvey Park neighborhood since 1975. Her house is just under three-quarters of a mile from the church, and she makes the trek on foot once a week. "I walk there and back on Sunday," she said. "Before, when I was a little younger, I would walk to 8 a.m. Mass every day, for years and years. And then it got a little difficult for me." Eleanor celebrated her 100 th birthday at a cousin's home in Morrison with about 50 friends and relatives. She had a plan for how to respond to every happy birthday wish. "Scream!" she joked. 40 NOVEMBER 2023 | DENVER CATHOLIC
