RIPTIDE & SANDBAR SAFETY SANDBAR SAFETY BREAK THE GRIP OF THE RIP If you get caught in a rip current, break free by swimming parallel to shore, outside the current. Once free, swim to shore. If you can't escape, tread water or fl oat un l help arrives. STEER CLEAR OF THE SANDBARS Sandbars on the south end of Tybee Island are surprisingly dangerous. Although they look safe to walk out on, the ming and depth of water at high and low de varies dras cally around the island. Avoid the sandbars at all mes for your safety and the safety of local lifeguards. You can be fi ned up to $1,000 if you walk, wade or swim to the South Beach sandbar. MIND THE TIDE Keep the des in mind while boa ng, kayaking and paddleboarding; venturing out at low de can get your vessel stuck or stranded.
