HOME ICE: SCHEELS Athletic Complex and Bernick's Pepsi Arena NICKNAME: Sabres 5 of STATE HOCKEY Sartell State of Hockey Spotlight Sartell, Minnesota, a city of nearly 20,000 residents and located roughly six miles north of St. Cloud, is a place where three rivers— the Mississippi, the Watab and the Sauk—have come together to power a community for more than 115 years. Like these connected waterways, the Sartell population has unit- ed to build a strong and flourishing hockey program that appears poised for sustained growth and success. Sartell began as a hub for lumber and paper as its main industries. It's on track to soon be known for producing great hockey talent. COMMUNITY COMES TOGETHER Growth success stories don't get written overnight. For Sartell, while there has been steady growth over the last 20 or so years, roughly eight years ago the Sartell Youth Hockey Association (SYHA) created a Hockey Operations Committee to support player and coaching development. That new approach and structure, along with recently enhanced responsibilities for its Hockey Director, allowed the association to build on its initial progress and create on- and off-ice programs to benefit its current pool of 370 players, which marks a player increase of more than 40 percent over the past seven years. Amy Peterson is president of the Sartell Youth Hockey Association (SYHA) and has seen firsthand the evolution of the local hockey landscape.
