A highly notable development this year is the strength of
LoRaWAN networking via satellite. LoRaWAN has multiple
characteristics that make it ideal for satellites. Its ability to
provide connectivity in hard-to-reach locations, using low power
and at a low cost, and significantly increasing capacity with
Long Range Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (LR-FHSS)
are key strengths that support rapidly growing satellite connec-
tivity markets like smart agriculture, environmental monitoring,
animal and asset tracking, smart utilities, and more.
Another aspect of the market's confidence in LoRaWAN is
our LoRaWAN Accredited Professional program, launched at
the start of the year. The program was designed to address
the growing need for skilled LoRaWAN technical professionals.
Developers and engineers who obtain accredited professional
status demonstrate a superior knowledge of LoRaWAN to
support IoT projects around the world, further building trust
with the end users and the LoRaWAN ecosystem.
Our two LoRaWAN Live! events truly showcased our ecosys-
tem, with end users sharing more deployment stories than ever
before. I was honored to be joined onstage at LoRaWAN Live
Orlando by IT engineer Colin Adderly of the City of Calgary,
Alberta, Canada, and his LoRaWAN ecosystem partners, who
are truly making the city smart. Adderly explained how the city
started with a single use case and quickly realized how the
LoRaWAN network could support countless additional use
cases the city had not thought of as it sought to digitize.
Orlando also saw ProSentry and Senet showing how
LoRaWAN could address emerging governmental safety
requirements related to monitoring gas leaks by shutting off
supply lines in a matter of seconds. Kairos demonstrated its
remarkable deployment in San Francisco's famed Ghirardelli
factory, where it virtually eliminated property damage from
water leaks.
LoRaWAN Live Tokyo was equally impressive, with a
wide range of deployments featured. One highlight was
RAKwireless' sticker-based asset-tracking solution, which
marks a significant advancement in sensor technology itself
and highlights the benefits of leveraging the extensive and
redundant nature of networks like Helium for better asset-
tracking capabilities. Yokogawa showcased its sensors used
for predictive maintenance to prevent factory shutdowns in
industrial settings and to improve subway operations in smart
cities through advanced LoRaWAN sensors and IoT integra-
tion. Actility showcased LoRaWAN's versatility and efficiency in
smart grid applications, explaining how key players like Power-
co, Tas Networks, Horizon Power, and Transgrid have adopted
LoRaWAN for their smart grid needs.
During 2023 we participated in four major vertical events:
Realcomm, ACE, Smart City Expo World Congress, and Enlit.
At all events, LoRaWAN was everywhere and well-known by
the audiences. We hosted our own booth at each show, with
members highlighting their LoRaWAN solutions. Our ecosys-
tem's presence across the show floor and on stage was
prominent throughout these events. In both smart cities and
smart utilities, massive LoRaWAN deployments are known,
understood, and driving new use cases every single day.
On the technical side, in conjunction with Enlit, we announced
that the IEC and CEN standards validated LoRaWAN for smart
metering, building on our earlier OMS Group and DLMS-UA
adoptions and further strengthening our ability to meet this
market's specialized requirements.
As is true every year, our success as an Alliance is due to
our members. Their work truly drives development and
advances in the LoRaWAN standard and allows us to maintain
and enhance our LoRaWAN certification program for end
devices and to continuously expand the LoRaWAN standard
itself. And now our members represent us as LoRaWAN
Accredited Professionals, and their companies' hard work,
dedication, and innovation have driven all of the LoRa
Alliance's successes. I can't wait to see what we're able
to accomplish together in 2024!
