EDUCATION Education | www.kahua.com/higher-education/ 2 The higher education industry must embrace emerging technologies to enhance teaching, learning, research and administrative processes. Colleges and universities are looking for ways to adapt their facilities to rapid technological advancements such as smart classrooms, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and artificial intelligence (AI). Institutions should consult with information technology (IT) departments, faculty and other stakeholders to determine the specific technology requirements for classrooms, laboratories, research centers, administrative offices and student spaces. This should lead to an outline of specific technological upgrades, expansions and integrations needed for each construction project. To ensure success, Higher Education institution of all sizes need to keep these areas in mind when developing their capital improvement programs: Capital improvement plans should not only consider current needs but also anticipate future technological advancements. The design of the infrastructure should be flexible and scalable to accommodate upgrades without significant disruptions or additional construction. Institutions should consider the use of modular systems, adaptable spaces and easily upgradable infrastructure to future-proof construction projects. Institutions should be constructing diverse types of buildings and classrooms that can be easily reconfigured to accommodate different teaching methods, collaboration and evolving technological needs.
