How did you first get into photog- raphy, specifically the shipping/ waterfront scene? I got into photography during COVID as a way for me to get out and stay active. Learning this craft during that time helped keep me motivated. Is photography your primary profes- sion? If not, what is your "day job?" Photography is just a side gig for me. My day job is working as the site manager of Split Rock Lighthouse. When I was learning photography, I would frequently go down to the shore below the light- house. Being surrounded by the amazing landscape helped fuel my passion. In my day job, I am always researching the his- tory of the lighthouse and its connection to Lake Superior. Split Rock's history is tied to the shipping industry, so it's a nat- ural connection. How would you describe your photography work? Are most shots planned or spontaneous? I always want to tell a story with my pho- tography, whether it's how I captured the image or what was happening in the scene. Often I have a location in mind, but not a specific idea. As I'm setting up, I try and think about what might look good. Sometimes, I scout a location and plan a shot, but I don't always have that much time, so most are pretty spontaneous. Do you have a personal connection to the lake from growing up in the region? Visiting? When I was younger, my grandfather took us to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness every summer. As we drove into Duluth, he always made sure we stopped in Canal Park or at Split Rock Lighthouse to enjoy the lake. Now that I live at Split Rock Lighthouse, my connection is deeply personal, and I love everything that is Lake Superior. Do you have other specialty focus areas in photography, as well? My big focus is night sky photography. With those images, I always try to invoke a feeling of wonder and inquisitiveness. There are so many stars out there, we are just a small part of this universe. How do you know when you get a great photo? When I look at the back of the camera and go, "Damn!" What other interesting aspects of your work or life would you like to share? Photography has changed my life. It has pushed me to learn new things, not only about photography, but about our region. It has fueled a passion for travel that I didn't know existed in me. It has also made me more aware of the natural beauty around me, and I have a better appreciation of what I have. with Hayes Scriven, hscrivenphoto.com IN FOCUS DULUTHPORT.COM | 21 The Joseph L.
