This training guide supports workers, managers, and supervisors in
delivering effective Lockout Tagout (LOTO) training, aligned with
CSA Standard Z460:20 Control of Hazardous Energy - Lockout and
Other Methods. This guide offers tools and insights for training
authorized individuals, affected individuals and supervisors.
The guide is structured into four key sections:
Preparation: Steps to take before conducting training
Delivery: Core topics to cover during the training session
Evaluation: Measures of LOTO training effectiveness
Follow-up: Activities to reinforce learning after training completion
The objective is to promote safe and proficient practices to control hazardous energy through
comprehensive training.
Preparation of Training
Delivering LOTO training is a significant responsibility, and being thoroughly prepared ensures the
training is effective and potentially life-saving.
Key preparation steps include:
1) Choose Your Trainer(s)
LOTO instruction can be led by a single person or a team. Ensure
your trainers are qualified and have a full understanding of the
legal requirements that apply to their work, and the CSA Standard
Z460:20. A solo trainer offers consistency in messaging and
application, ideally someone with deep knowledge of relevant
legislation, standards, and the facility's machinery. If using a team,
divide responsibilities: one group can handle the theoretical
portion, while experienced personnel lead the hands-on training.
All trainers should coordinate regularly to maintain consistent messaging and ensure they understand
both the legal requirements and adult learning strategies. Familiarity with adult learning principles is
essential for effective knowledge transfer.
