After Training
Following up with learners is an essential part of training. Keeping
communication open reassures learners that support is available
and that they are not alone.
Follow-up includes:
1) Answering Outstanding Questions.
Some topics raised during training may need further
clarification—such as specific lockout/tagout (LOTO)
procedures for certain machines. Share answers with the
entire group, ideally via email, and confirm that the response meets their needs.
2) Offering Additional Support.
Everyone learns differently and at their own pace. Be ready to provide extra help, such as shadowing
and coaching, for those who need it.
3) Communicating About Ongoing LOTO Training (trainees and their Supervisors).
The CSA standard requires LOTO retraining at regular intervals—not exceeding three years.
Retraining may be needed sooner if procedures aren't being followed, equipment changes, roles shift,
or new LOTO tasks arise. Make sure both learners and their supervisors are aware of this schedule
and know that refresher training is available anytime it's needed.
Taking these considerations into account and making steps to be prepared in advance of, during and after
training will help you deliver effective and impactful LOTO training to your co-workers and colleagues.
For more information about building an effective training program, review CSA Z1001, and for specific
information about what training is required, review section 7.5.2 of CSA Z460:20.
