2024 USE CASE Wireless Structural Health Monitoring of Cable-Stayed Bridge with LoRaWAN â Cable-stayed bridges require sophisticated and reliable sensor systems to monitor structural health. Traditional wired networks are expensive, time-consuming to install, and challenging to maintain, especially in harsh environments. SOLUTION Dongil Engineering Consultants Co., in partnership with TEKTELIC, deployed a LoRaWAN â -based SHM system using smart sensor nodes and TEKTELIC KONA Macro IoT Gateways. The LoRaWAN network provided several key benefits: • Long Range: Capable of transmitting data over long distances, ideal for large structures like bridges. • Low Power Consumption: Ensures long battery life for sensor nodes, reducing maintenance requirements. • Scalability: Easily integrates additional sensors as needed. • Cost-Effective Deployment: Reduces installation and operational costs compared to wired networks. The TEKTELIC KONA Macro IoT Gateway, with its robust, high- performing outdoor design and versatile deployment options, complemented these benefits. The system allows for long-term monitoring, efficient data management, and real-time damage identification and status evaluation. SITUATION Dongil Engineering Consultants Co. aimed to develop a cost- effective, efficient, and reliable structural health monitoring (SHM) system for cable-stayed bridges that could provide real-time data and reduce installation and maintenance costs. To achieve this, they chose to deploy a LoRaWAN â network with TEKTELIC KONA Macro gateways. ISSUE Traditional wired sensor networks for SHM posed several challenges: • High Costs: Prohibitively expensive to install and maintain. • Installation Complexity: Difficult and time-consuming to deploy. • Maintenance Difficulties: Challenging to maintain, especially in harsh environments. • Limited Monitoring Capabilities: Difficulty in achieving a wide frequency range for monitoring pylons, cables, and decks. • Lack of Real-Time Data: Inability to recognize changes affecting the bridge's structural integrity promptly. RESULTS By replacing the wired sensor network with the wireless LoRaWAN ® network based on TEKTELIC KONA Macro IoT Gateway, Dongil Engineering Consultants Co. achieved over 50% cost savings. The wireless smart sensor nodes effectively detect vibrations caused by environmental and traffic loading, enabling real- time data collection and analysis. This solution not only reduces costs but also enhances the efficiency and effectiveness of the SHM process, serving as a prominent example of new technology in the civil engineering field.
