2024 USE CASE LoRaWAN â Solution For Advanced Energy Management Effective energy management is crucial for various sectors, including commercial and residential buildings, public services, and industrial organizations. Real-time energy consumption data is essential for making informed decisions to improve operational efficiency and reduce costs. The implementation of IoT technologies, such as LoRaWAN ® , can significantly decrease energy consumption and related expenses. SOLUTION To address these challenges, DS Energy partnered with TEKTELIC to deploy a smart energy management system based on LoRaWAN ® architecture. The solution provided several key benefits: • Long-Range Communication: Capable of transmitting data over long distances, suitable for both small and large buildings. • Low Power Consumption: Ensures long battery life for sensor nodes, reducing maintenance requirements. • Scalability: Easily integrates additional sensors as needed. • Cost-Effective Deployment: Reduces installation and operational costs compared to traditional wired networks. DS Energy utilized TEKTELIC KONA Micro and Macro IoT Gateways for different building sizes. The KONA Micro IoT Gateway is ideal for indoor environments, offering excellent communication performance even in dense networks. The KONA Macro IoT Gateway is suited for larger areas and outdoor deployments, with a hardened IP67 enclosure and integrated band-pass filter to resist interference from surrounding networks. SITUATION DS Energy aimed to provide their clients with a robust energy management solution that could collect real-time data from multiple measuring points and reduce energy consumption. They chose to deploy a LoRaWAN ® network and selected TEKTELIC gateways as the most reliable option for their needs. ISSUE Energy Traditional energy management systems posed several challenges: • High Costs: Increasing energy costs, particularly for industrial companies. • Inefficiency: Existing systems often had incorrect settings and required frequent manual intervention. • Energy Wastage: Inefficient energy usage and unplanned maintenance. • Faulty Equipment: Breakdowns leading to significant downtime and repair costs. RESULTS By replacing traditional systems with the LoRaWAN ® network and TEKTELIC gateways, DS Energy achieved significant improvements: • Cost Savings: Clients experienced up to 10-20% savings in energy consumption. • Enhanced Monitoring: Real-time data collection and analysis enabled better decision-making. • Improved Efficiency: Reduced energy wastage and unplanned maintenance. A specific example includes an industrial de-greasing facility that was able to save approximately 90,000 kWh per year and 38,000 euros annually by implementing a stop procedure during non-operational hours and restructuring operations based on real-time data.
