32 KIT BOYD My work explores our relationship with landscape and our place in nature. Samuel Palmer is one of my greatest influences. My work 'Shoreham' was created for the Darent Valley Community Rail Partnership as a commission. I used materials Palmer experimented with during his Shoreham years, working with ink, watercolour and gum arabic on board. I've referenced several of his pictures: the hare wanders in from 'Early Morning', the moon and leaves arise from 'Coming from Evening Church', a 'bright cloud' appears on the horizon, and a bird's next emerges from Palmer's dense ink drawings. Many of the same inspirations remain in the valley, from skylarks singing in the fields, to the idyllic villages bordering the chalk River Darent, flowing through largely unspoilt countryside. 'Man with a Laptop' offers a modern twist in a verdant natural setting, an updated 'Early Morning'. Shoreham Ink on board 40.5 x 30 cm W W W . K I T B O Y D . C O M
