36 SARAH BOURNE The mosaic is a response to Samuel Palmer's 'Pear Tree in a Walled Garden', circa 1829, when he was living in Shoreham, and painting his garden at Water House, the Georgian house on the edge of the river that runs through Shoreham. As a lover of trees and nature, I was very inspired by the quirkiness of his pear tree, espaliered to the wall and in full spring bloom – I felt that it lent itself beautifully to being recreated in mosaic.
