40 NICOLA CLAXTON I like the fact that Samuel Palmer chose the medium of pencil and paper to make sketches of the Ancient Trees in Lullingstone. This made his work accessible to me from two points: the medium chosen and the subject matter. I find ancient trees fascinating: their form and texture, and what seems to me to be their enduring mark on the landscape over a very long time. Palmer really captured the texture of the bark with his pencil-work, the big and the small details. I have not sketched for a very long time, but this fired my imagination to get out pencils and paper for tree portraits, of these loved ancient trees I have known for many years and hopefully many years to come.
