DUNCAN DWINELL
I have a lovely friend, in her 90s, Griselda Barton, who
with a colleague researched Palmer's less well known
connection to the Underriver area south of Sevenoaks
towards Hildenborough. The pastoral scenes he
created there, so close to the town of Sevenoaks
and the city of London, were more like Devon or
West Sussex. One such image was of an oak tree in
the middle of a farm field near what is now Romshed
Organic Farm. The same tree is still standing proud. I
realise that this is not strictly a Darent Valley setting,
but is certainly a Samuel Palmer image.
