JANE SANDOE
It feels as if Samuel Palmer has been embedded in
my imagination since I was a child. My father told
stories of his pilgrimages to the 'valley of vision'
made when my father had been a student at
Goldsmiths College in the 1920s, and part of the
movement that adopted Samuel Palmer as their
inspiration. For a while in 1978/9 Samuel Palmer
became a household name for those involved
in the public enquiry into the Kent section of
the M25 motorway. The argument was that a
motorway would spoil the 'valley of vision'. The
motorway went ahead, but many people came to
know about Samuel Palmer. From time to time I
have come across books and been to exhibitions
celebrating the work of Samuel Palmer, although
it is only recently I have begun to realise the
potential of his influence. To what extent it is for
the viewer to decide.
