24 COLIN ANDERSON I have long been a fan of Samuel Palmer's work, not least because I grew up in Eynsford and have walked many times to Shoreham, both along the Darent Valley and over the hills from Austin Lodge Farm. So it is no surprise that he has also influenced my own painting a great deal. The painting I have included is of Magpie Bottom which is a hidden valley on the back slope of the North Downs, just above Shoreham. Despite being only twenty miles from London the valley feels remarkably undiscovered and magical, and just the sort of place that Palmer would have visited.
