MARGARET DEVITT
Samuel Palmer was 'discovered' by a number of
twentieth century artists who were fascinated not
so much by his more conventional watercolours and
oils, but by the sheer inventiveness of his use of ink
and watercolour. Following in this tradition I decided
to focus on the Tree, particularly in the moonlight,
but also at different times of the day. I did not want
to copy him nor to copy the landscape but allow the
medium to suggest the form in an idiom appropriate
to two hundred years after the time he spent in
Shoreham.
