76 SUE TAYLOR-LOWEN My response to Samuel Palmer's work is inspired by two pieces, 'Valley Thick With Corn' and 'The Magic Apple Tree'. I have worked with the landscape shapes in Valley Thick With Corn, excluding human and animal presence, only marking the place where the man had been reading, lying against a tree stump. What remains is a crushed bed of corn. The colours in my work are inspired by those in The Magic Apple Tree. I tried to work with Samuel Palmer's aim of enhancing richness and luminosity, by adding extra gum arabic to my watercolours. Samuel Palmer was a devout Christian, drawn to churches. In my artwork the hills are a network of shapes, colour and light which suggest the stained glass windows of a church. Harvest is a theme in both Samuel Palmer works I have chosen, principally apples and corn. These features I have enhanced in my artwork with small glass beads in clear acrylic gel.
