ROBYN PAYNE
My work with the star at its heart takes its inspiration
from how humans have perceived the natural world
through the means of folklore and fairytales, which
are great inspirations to me. I relate this piece to
Samuel Palmer's work 'Shepherds under a Full
Moon' as they both direct your sight to a celestial
body whilst also being surrounded by scenery.
My second work is my first linocut which features
natural imagery that I have either photographed
or interpreted from the Darent Valley. I used a
technique of scratching the linoleum with a maths
compass so that my print would come out looking
more distressed and faded much like old Victorian
photographs. The print is made up of six elements
which all piece together to form a composition of the
fields inspired by those that border Lullingstone Park,
framed by trees, a deer and the moon surrounded
by clouds. I relate it to Palmer's works 'The
Bright Cloud' – due to the distressed but glowing
appearances of the upper and lower pieces – and
'Valley Thick with Corn' in relation to the positioning
of the faint deer at the foreground and the hilly
landscape that leads to the sky.
