94 ANGELA STRONG In Samuel Palmer's work I love the finely observed details and romanticised version of the English landscape he depicts. His approach was more unconventional for the time and I love the imaginative details in his work. After looking closely at his paintings, I took his use of detail, the very fine lines and patterns he used to define nature in his landscapes, from the smaller items – mushrooms, grass, plants, flowers, foliage, to larger areas like trees, fields, dells and nooks of the English countryside. Using these as a reference I laid out my own landscape and filled it in with fine imagined detail as he had done. Then using inks and wash I tried to achieve the low glimmering light that he achieved in so much of his work. Moonlight Ink 40 x 50 cm
