THE ERGONOMICS OF ROADSIDE TIRE CHANGE 4 310-BSU-01-IGDO © 2024, Workplace Safety & Prevention Services (WSPS) 1 877 494 WSPS (9777) | 905 614 1400 | WSPS.CA Additional Considerations When changing a tire on the roadside, a few other considerations impact the decisions about how to change a tire. These include: Extreme weather conditions – Rain, snow and wind can impact grip and physical comfort. Dress appropriately and have temporary shelters available if required. Time of day – Working at dusk, dawn or night can impact visibility. Have LED lights (including ones attached to tools) to ensure you can see the tires you work on and the environment around you. Fatigue – During certain times of the year, such as when seasons change, there is an increase in calls for road assistance, and it's not uncommon for workers to take on multiple and consecutive jobs. Be aware that fatigue can increase MSD risk, as muscles weaken and overcompensate. Take breaks and listen to your body. Don't wait until an injury to stop working. In Conclusion The tasks associated with roadside tire change exposes workers to MSDs, which can impede work. Workers can avoid injuries by taking precautions, working thoughtfully, and enjoying a healthy career assisting customers in their time of need. Special Thanks WSPS would like to acknowledge Ontario Tire Dealers Association (OTDA) for the their contribution to this resource. WSPS.CA
