mprovements continue at the Clure Terminal Expansion on the northeast side of Rice's Point in Duluth, where recon- struction of Berth 10 and Berth 11 steamed ahead through late fall. The project involves replacement of a wood crib and failed dock built in the early 1900s alongside the former Occident 'C' and Peavey Duluth 'D' grain terminals. The dock featured seawalls constructed of rough-cut lumber stacked upon itself, a common design of the times in timber-rich locales. The Duluth Seaway Port Authority purchased the site in 1989 and cleared it of the dormant grain terminals a decade later, then redeveloped the remaining land as an expansion of the Duluth Cargo Connect multimodal logistics hub in 2016. The Port Authority is working with AMI Consulting Engineers, Barr Engineering, Lunda Construction and Northern Interstate Construction to complete the project, which requires installation of a new sheet pile bulkhead in front of the failed dock along two sides. This new bulkhead wall is tied back to a sheet pile wall located 95 feet behind the water's edge. After a crew from J.F. Brennan dredges the adjacent berths to Seaway depth, the Port Authority will install bollards and then return the berths to service for the first time in decades. The renovation will increase vessel-berthing capacity to eight ship berths for Duluth Cargo Connect, while also expanding uncom- promised cargo laydown space by approximately 5 acres. "It's always exciting to complete these kinds of projects that modernize our port and help expand its potential," said Dean Lembke, director of building and facilities, Duluth Seaway Port Authority. "This new structure will help Duluth Cargo Connect maximize that corner of the property, which will add to cargo-handling efficiency and also create new opportunities."
