REGULATORY WORKING GROUP
The Regulatory Working Group (RWG) of the LoRa Alliance
®
identifies key regulatory changes and public policy challenges to
secure technical parameters, to promote the LoRaWAN
®
ecosystem's interests and to ensure the business of LoRa Alliance
member companies can flourish with appropriate regulations worldwide.
Open to all members of the LoRa Alliance, the participation in the RWG has never been higher: 25% growth in 2022 allowed the
RWG to reach nearly 130 members. Our active membership allows us to increase our global activities to further advance LoRaWAN's
deployment around the world.
RWG activities included:
• Monitored and alerted the LoRa Alliance on key cybersecu-
rity, standardization and certification policies in Europe
• Updated the LoRa Alliance spectrum & certification regula-
tory database, which now includes more than 90 countries
• Contributed to the European Conference of Postal and
Telecommunications Administrations (CEPT) working
groups for:
- Harmonization of the 915 MHz in European Commission
Decisions
- Electronic Communications Committee (ECC) Recom-
mendations for the increase of the transmit power of the
gateway in Europe, which was defined in coordination
with the LoRa Alliance Technical Committee
• Defined a regulatory position for satellite networks using
LoRaWAN in ISM bands and evangelized our position in
Europe and Asia-Pacific
- Invited to present the LoRa Alliance regulatory positions
during the CEPT Workshop on satellite innovations and
regulatory challenges
• Directly responded to regulators' inquiries and consultations,
and supported LoRa Alliance members in more 15 countries
in Latin America, Europe, Asia, Middle East and Africa
• Completed the work initiated in 2021 to finalize LoRaWAN's
inclusion in India's list of Smart Cities Standards and the
release of an additional 1 MHz spectrum for LoRaWAN
• Secured important European regulatory speakers for the
LoRaWAN World Expo:
- Laure de la Raudière spoke on The Role of
Regulation in Digitization and described the
complementary nature of LoRaWAN and other
pillars of IoT networking and
highlighted regulatory measures
taken to advance LoRaWAN's
worldwide interoperability.
- Irina Reyes delivered a Keynote from EU
Commissioner's Cabinet and provided a summary
of EU Commission projects and funding related to
technology and IoT.
- A Regulatory Panel featuring Ales Brabinek, Andrew
Gowans, Daniel Bielefeld, and Vincent Durepaire. Topics
included a radio spectrum regulation policy roadmap, a
discussion of harmonizing radio spectrum for IoT at the
European Union level, rules for bands that LoRaWAN
can use, how Germany manages spectrum demand,
and Shareholder Rights Directive (SRD) regulatory
architecture in Europe.
Laure de la Raudiere, president
of ARCEP, speaks at the
LoRaWAN World Expo.
