FOUR-PLAY SCORE Pro Quad Racers Discuss Their Love Of The Class By Gabriel García Photos by Get Some Photo For Mexican Quad racers in SCORE International like Adolfo ‘Dofo’ Arellano and Hector Márquez, racing on a quad or ATV (four-wheeled motorcycle) in a SCORE Baja 1000 or Baja 500 is a unique experience. To them, racing a four-wheel Quad is something they had dreamed of since they were kids, and today, that dream is a reality. Arellano, who has won the SCORE Baja 1000, Baja 500, and San Felipe 250 multiple times, mentioned that racing in a SCORE event represents a lot of effort. “We have to invest over $10,000 dollars in a race,” he said. “This includes the prep of the bike, pre-running, entry fees, lodging, fuel for the support crew, and food. It’s a great experience.” Regarding the Pro Quad class, Adolfo, from Tijuana, Baja California, pointed out that he always seeks to compete against the best, especially if there are more racers in the class. “The mere fact of racing in a SCORE Baja is very special because of the challenge of its terrain, but it’s even more special if there are more racers. That’s part of what you look for when competing.” A DREAM COME TRUE Hector Marquez, Pro Quad champion in the 2024 SCORE World Desert Championship as part of No. 31a Estevan Ramirez Junior’s team, acknowledged that his childhood dream was to participate in a SCORE Baja 1000, something he has already achieved, adding to his victory in the 57th BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 1000 in Ensenada, Baja California. “It’s a feeling that makes you feel very alive,” he said. “The terrain is very special, as you have all kinds of it in Baja. Personally, I would like to have more competitors, but I know that racing in SCORE represents a huge investment in money, time, and effort. It’s not easy to participate in an event of such an international organization.” For Marquez, the fact that there are so many Mexican riders in the Pro Quad class speaks to the quality of talent of new riders, but also many with a lot of experience. “I hope more riders from other countries will join this class. It’s a lot of fun and demands total concentration while riding the bike.” SJ
