Developing the Program
Establish standards based on industry guidelines and best practices, specifying required illumination
levels for different tasks and areas. These standards may include ANSI/IES RP-7-17: Recommended
Practice for Lighting Industrial Facilities, ISO 8995-1:2002: Lighting of Work Places – Part 1: Indoor.
Select lighting fixtures and technologies that meet these standards.
Implementation
Implement lighting solutions in phases, starting with the most critical areas, ensuring proper
positioning, even light distribution, and minimizing shadows and glare.
Coordinate with other safety measures, such as signage and hazard markings, for comprehensive
coverage.
Training and Awareness
Train employees on the importance of proper lighting and reporting lighting issues, including
lighting safety.
Use various methods of communication such as posters, newsletters, and meetings to raise
awareness about new lighting standards and their benefits.
Monitoring and Maintenance
Schedule regular inspections to ensure lighting systems function correctly, checking for issues like
burnt-out bulbs, flickering lights, and obstructed fixtures.
Develop a maintenance plan to address lighting issues promptly, keeping spare bulbs and fixtures on
hand for quick replacements.
Establish a preventative maintenance program to clean debris/dust/dirt to improve illumination and
replace bulbs regularly before the end of life.
Evaluation and Improvement
Gather feedback from employees about the effectiveness of the new lighting using surveys and
suggestion boxes. Surveys should include the impact lighting may have had on their health, such as
increased/decreased headaches.
Regularly review and update lighting standards and maintenance plans based on evaluation of the
feedback and new technologies.
