SAN FELIPE Between The Sea And Adventure South of Mexicali, about 197 km, is the capital of Baja California, San Felipe. It awaits those looking for open landscapes, with a sunlit port, surrounded by extensive salt flats that highlight the contrast between the desert and the sea. The name of the port was given by the Jesuit Juan Fernando Consag in 1746, although the area had already been explored by the navigators who accompanied Cortez when he discovered it. Long before that, however, the Cucapá and Paipai peoples inhabited this region. It was in the mid-20th century, when San Felipe began to cater to tourism, attracting visitors from Mexico, the United States, and Canada. Its calm atmosphere and beaches with serene waters make it a destination ideal for those looking for rest, fishing, or as a winter getaway. During the low tides, the sea exposes the seabed out to a kilometer from the beach. Today, its main boardwalk offers a varied gastronomy, while from the top of Cerrito de la Virgen, you can see panoramic views with the lighthouse as a reference point. San Felipe is a meeting point with nature. Its beaches, its sea, and its biodiversity have led to this ecosystem being recognized by explorers like Jacques Cousteau, who called it the “Aquarium of the World.” Landscapes From Another World Traveling north on Federal Highway 5, between kilometers 104 and 105, you will find El Salar, a vast white surface that contrasts with the arid landscape. At sunrise or sunset, the play of light colors the nearby mountains, creating a unique visual spectacle. In this environment a natural cycle is formed in which small lagoons appear at high tide, and when evaporated, leave a layer crystalline salt. Following the route, the road leads to the Alto Golfo de Biosphere Reserve. It is where California and the Colorado River Delta converge, the peninsula meets Sonora, and the river merges with the sea. This corner of absolute calm is accompanied only by the sound of the wind and the sway of the tides. Desert Adventure San Felipe is an essential destination for off-road lovers. Every year, it receives numerous pilots and fans from around the world who tour its deserts and mountains in vehicles modified to overcome the extreme terrain. Events like the SCORE Baja 500 and SCORE San Felipe 250 run through this area, providing a show where adrenaline combines with the beauty of the landscape. Inside the Chenowth Hotel, in Rancho Percebú, there is a space dedicated to the history of off-road, with vehicles designed by Lynn Chenowth, a pioneer in off-road vehicle engineering in the 1970s. In addition to displaying trophies, helmets, and other iconic elements, the hotel offers a spa, pool, and an air-conditioned bar. The hotel's proximity to the sea makes it an excellent option for fishing. March and September are key seasons for those seeking to experience the excitement of these competencies. Desert Giants Among the natural wonders of San Felipe is the Valley of the Giants, majestic cacti that can reach up to 19 meters in height and live more than 1,600 years. Also known as Saguaro, these cacti have been witnesses to the passage of time, and play an essential role in the ecosystem. Its roots can extend up to 30 meters to absorb water, while their skin allows them to conserve water. Birds, coyotes and other desert inhabitants depend on its fruits and for shelter. During the day, the paths that cross this area invite you to explore the area, while at night, the clear sky offers one of the best views to observe the stars. If you visit this place, it is advisable to bring water, sunscreen and appropriate clothing. There are trails to explore on foot and, in some seasons, there are guided night walks. Since it is a protected area, it is prohibited to leave garbage, extract flora or fauna, and alter the environment. San Felipe is an essential destination for those seeking adventure, landscapes spectacular and a unique connection with the desert and the sea. Whether enjoying its iconic off-road races, exploring its natural wealth or simply relaxing in front of the Gulf of California, this port offers experiences that are unforgettable for everyone who visits it.
