THE ERGONOMICS OF SEASONAL TIRE CHANGING 5 310-BYA-01-IGDO © 2025, Workplace Safety & Prevention Services (WSPS) 1 877 494 WSPS (9777) | 905 614 1400 | WSPS.CA Remove lug nuts using pneumatic tooling and place them in a waist pouch or cart instead of placing them on the floor to prevent unnecessary bending. Tires can be stuck in place, so some force is usually required. Ensure you tighten your core, place one foot in front of the other, and place your body close enough to the tire so your elbows are at approximately 90 degrees. Pull the tire to loosen it and reposition yourself for removal. When necessary, gain assistance from a second person or tool. Ensure you have a firm grip on either side of the tire, place one foot in front of the other, and put your body close enough to the tire so your elbows are at approximately 90 degrees. Engage your core, and lower the tire to the ground. You could maintain the offset stance to lunge to the ground or use a squat. Avoid bending at the waist, which usually transfers the weight to the back. If space permits, consider lowering the tire to a cart and completing the lift in two stages. Use a tire cart to move tires to the tire changer and balancer if required. Repeat the steps above when lifting the new tires into place. A lunge lift could be beneficial to allow you to get closer to the tire. If possible, lower the hoist so the tires can be rolled and slightly lifted into place using the abovementioned principles. Tighten the core, tire close to the body, and back straight. WSPS.CA
