56 / MARCH.APRIL.2025 USICERINKS.COM PHOTOS: CRAIG PETERSEN ICE BOCCE Welcome fresh faces to the rink this spring rrowhead High School in Hartland, Wisconsin is trying a new program for their physical education classes this school year, ice bocce. They began a pilot program at the start of the school year with one of the PE teachers, and the students loved it. They have now added two days to every PE teacher's curriculum for next year. One of the issues with skating or hockey classes is that there is a wide range of skating abilities. The Arrowhead students found that no matter their athletic background, ice bocce was a good equalizer for all participants. Since players just wear their regular shoes on the ice, no skating ability is needed. The school has also had their special education classes over several times to play, and this spring, they will be running an after- school intramural program. So what is ice bocce? It is a mix between bocce and curling. The ideal playing surface is dirty ice, so do not clean/resurface the ice beforehand.
