Q.
Is a hazardous material inventory a legal requirement?
A.
No, but it is a good idea to help you organize your information. Employers need to be aware
of what hazardous products they have in their workplace, who is handling what, and take all
necessary precautions to protect their workers.
Q.
Does WHMIS apply to hazardous waste or waste in general? Are protective measures
still required for workers who handle or process waste?
A.
No that is an exemption in Reg. 860, refer to section 4. (4). Technically labels are not required.
However, the employer is still expected to provide information and training on how to identify
hazards and ensure their workers know how to handle it safely.
Q.
Does WHMIS offer a guide of standard controls and/or best practices that are specific to
WHMIS pictograms?
A.
The HPR determines what Pictogram is appropriate depending on the characteristics of the
hazardous product. The precautionary statements associated with each pictogram will give
information on controls.
Refer to section 2 in the SDS for precautions that are related to the pictogram.
WHMIS.org is a good resource in general.
