Who and by what means are WHMIS requirements enforced? A. MLITSD Health and Safety Inspectors and MLITSD Occupational Hygienists Inspectors enforce Reg. 860. MLITSD Occupational Hygienists have been given authority to enforce the HPA and HPR. Q. What are the triggers that would require WHMIS re-training? A. If a Safety Data Sheet (SDS) has been updated by the supplier to make it compliant with the amended HPR No proof of workplace specific training Lack of worker knowledge on the hazards associated with the products they work with Q. What is the difference between generic and workplace specific WHMIS training? A. Generic WHMIS training covers general information and would be the same for every workplace. For example, learning about what everyone's responsibilities are, what the WHMIS symbols mean, the components of the SDS and supplier labels, when workplace labels are required etc. This generic information is often delivered through a generic e-course on WHMIS. It is an important first step in understanding what WHMIS is. However, this is not sufficient on its own. Additional training is required specific to the hazards present to a specific workplace. It is extremely important to couple that training with workplace specific training on the specific hazardous chemicals in your workplace. Refer to section 6 and 7 of Reg. 860 for all the details that are required in the training. Every employer needs to understand what hazardous chemicals are in the workplace and develop procedures and training for workers regarding the safe use, storage, handling and disposal of hazardous products, as well as procedures to follow when fugitive emissions are present and what to do in case of an emergency involving the hazardous product. Q. What would a typical order look like? Does it require both workplace specific training, or just generic training? A. For lack of training or to update WHMIS training, an order may be issued under sections 6 or 7 of the WHMIS Regulation 860. WHMIS training must always be site specific to ensure that workers are knowledgeable about the hazards of the products they work with. WSPS.CA
