OMETIMES TRACK CONDITIONS don't allow for
a rip-roaring green-flag start, even though the race is
officially underway. Such was the case for commercial
navigation across Lake Superior this spring, despite the
Poe Lock's early opening on March 21.
A combination of market factors, vessel maintenance delays and
stubborn ice at the eastern end of Lake Superior brought out the
metaphorical green and yellow flags over the freighters in March.
The Port of Duluth-Superior counted only five arrivals during the
month, with three of them occurring March 31. By comparison, twice
as many vessels called at the Twin Ports in March 2024.
