16 // JUNE 2025 USAHOCKEYMAGAZINE.COM B ET W E E N T H E P I P ES HEN SYRACUSE AND PENN STATE took the ice at Tennity Ice Pavilion for a mid-January matchup, it was a battle of two teams heading in opposite directions. The visiting Nittany Lions were enjoying a top 10 perch in the wom- en's collegiate ranks, while Syracuse was sitting in the middle of the pack in the American Hockey Association. Still, the Orange were holding their own in a scoreless tie when Nicole Hall streaked into the zone and whipped a low wrist shot that Syracuse goaltender Allie Kelley easily cradled in her midsection. As an official retrieved the puck, Kelley's teammates streamed onto the ice and mobbed the veteran goaltender as the crowd shouted their approval while waving placards signifying Kelley's place as the NCAA's all-time saves leader. (She would close out her career with an astounding 4,581 saves.) Rather than bask in the moment, all the senior captain could think of was her team being assessed a bench minor penalty for delay of game.
