The disease is progressive and is characterized by symmetrical ataxia, abnormal stance or posture at rest, and proprioceptive deficits in all limbs. EDM was first described by Drs. Mayhew, deLahunta and Whitlock in 1977. Clinical signs usually develop by 6 six to 12 months of age and are characterized as upper motor neuron and general proprioceptive tract lesions. Affected horses often have low serum α-tocopherol concentrations. Equine NAD is clinically indistinguishable from equine degenerative myeloencephalopathy (EDM); the only difference between these disorders is the location of axonal degeneration within the central nervous system. #104: EQUINE DEGENERATIVE MYELOENCEPHALOPATHY.
