The equine lumbo sacral disc is a rarely diagnosed cause for lameness and rear limb ataxia. Ultrasound
imaging of the lumbo sacral disc and caudal lumbar discs is easily performed with a rectal ultrasound
or small curvilinear probe. Lumbo-sacral disc pathology is more common than lumbar disc pathology
due to the increased flexion and extension forces at that location. Symptoms can range from
extreme weakness and ataxia to mild performance issues. Treatment with a caudal epidural utilizing
corticosteroids is often effective in treating these cases.
