Since 1979 – Providing veterinary care that improves the health and welfare of the Horse Member, American Association of Equine Practitioners WERNER EQUINE, LLC What is the purpose of a Prepurchase Examination? When we perform a Prepurchase Examination, our goal is to protect the interests of the Prospective Buyer by determining, as much as circumstances permit, the current health status of the horse offered for sale. Dr. Werner reviews the information that the Seller and Prospective Buyer provide and then recommends specific services to be included in the overall Prepurchase Examination. As the Prospective Buyer, you receive a written Report after the appointment that includes the information we gathered from you and the Seller, Dr. Werner's patient examination findings and his interpretation of those findings and any pertinent diagnostic images. This information is meant to enable you to make an informed decision regarding the horse. It is important to realize that a Prepurchase Examination is an evaluation of the horse's health on the day of examination, but it is not a predictor of athletic ability, future health or re-sale value. What services will Dr. Werner recommend be included in the Prepurchase Examination? Prepurchase Examination can be limited to physical examination of the horse or be expanded to include supportive diagnostic studies and ancillary services. Dr. Werner will recommend specific services be included in the examination of a horse after considering factors such as: Patient breed and age Intended use and rider(s) Medical History Prospective Buyer concerns Present level of training/competition Physical examination findings Supportive diagnostic studies and ancillary services can provide important information about a horse's current health status. A Prospective Buyer can choose which ancillary services to include as part of the overall examination - at the time of scheduling the visit or via discussion with Dr. Werner on-site (or via telephone) at the appointment. Ancillary services to consider may include: Infectious Disease Testing to rule out presence of active infection (especially recommended for horses being sold out of a public sales stable). Drug Screen Testing to detect presence of pain-masking, antiinflammatory or mood-affecting drugs Coggins test to learn EIA status (unless Seller provides a current, negative EIA report) Radiography to evaluate orthopedic health Videoendoscopy to evaluate upper airway condition Ultrasonography to evaluate questionable soft tissue findings Tick-borne Infection Testing Mares: examination via rectal palpation to assess general reproductive health Health certificate and/or Insurance paperwork THIS IS A SAMPLING OF THE PROCEEDINGS FOR THE PHYSICAL, LAMENESS AND PRE-PURCHASE EXAMS LECTURES THAT WILL BE GIVEN ON SATURDAY, AUGUST 1ST BEGINNING AT 9:00AM.
