DAN SANCHEZ EDITOR WALKER EVAN'S INFLUENCE Indeed, Walker Evans was often referred to as the "grandfather" of off-road racing. Looking back at his career, he had a hand in nearly everything that makes up the off-road industry, including me. I was lucky enough to meet Walker way back in the early 1990s when I was working for a publishing company, and was invited to a Goodyear Wrangler Tire long-lead for the press. These events allowed journalists to test and preview the latest model tires across various forms of terrain. The event included a 1/4 mile off-road course where we got to ride with Walker Evans. I had never met Walker or ridden a Trophy Truck, so I was eager to get into his blue Dodge Ram with my helmet on and buckled into the passenger seat harness. As we went around the course, catching air and kicking up dirt, Walker would motion with his hand if I was okay. I replied with my hand to hammer the accelerator and go faster. Afterwards, he told me he had not taken a journalist around that course that fast, and wondered if I had raced before. I told him I had road racing and drag racing experience, but never in off-road. I was hooked on off-road racing ever since because of him. I would see and talk to Walker at many more industry shows, rock crawling events, and races throughout the years. In 2015, I became the editor of SCORE Journal and learned of the many people whom he had helped start their off-road racing careers. In November of 2020, my journalist friend Stuart Bourdon and I went to interview Walker about his restored F100 truck that he first drove with Bill Stroppe. It's a great story that is included in this month's issue, from November 2020.
