odern off-road racing suspension systems are a combination of
decades of trial and error, mechanical science, modern design,
lightweight materials, racing experience, best guesses, and a thirst
for performance. It sounds absurdly complicated, but race vehicle
builders utilize all these things to come up with off-road racing
suspension systems that can have as much as 36 inches of wheel travel, while keeping
the vehicle level and smooth under the most extreme high-speed conditions.
Insight into how racing suspension systems work and how similarly designed
systems can be different at the same time comes from various race vehicle builders.
We spoke with some of the premier vehicle builders of Trophy Trucks and Class 1
buggies, as well as suspension tuning experts, including Rafael Navarro IV at Jimco,
Neil Mason at Mason Motorsports, and SDG Suspension's co-owners Jason Duncan
and Todd Tenbroek.
