The Vehicle Service and Repair sector is very diverse, from small family run specialized shops to large dealerships and repair facilities. With this variety comes many different types of hazards. Alongside these hazards, there are real opportunities to put effective controls in place to significantly reduce risks and create a safer environment for workers. When hazards are not effectively managed, the consequences can be serious, including injuries, business disruptions, or worse. Workplace Safety & Prevention Services (WSPS) and the Vehicle Service and Repair industry are working together to develop solutions that address the top ten risks in this sector. This document provides some clarity on current resources and workplace best practices that address these risks. Top 10 Risks in the Vehicle Service and Repair Sector 1. Noise exposure 2. Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) from manually handling objects, supplies, parts, tires, etc. 3. Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) from awkward postures (extreme reach, overhead work) 4. Airborne debris causing eye injury 5. Contact with falling or static objects, working under or around vehicles (hoist, jack, lube pit) 6. Dispensing and handling chemicals for repairs, maintenance, and cleaning of vehicles and parts 7. Contact with high voltage systems (batteries, electric vehicles) 8. Contact with nip or pinch point 9. Poor walking surface conditions or layout leading to slips, trips or falls 10.
