Noise Exposure
The tools used to maintain and repair vehicles can
generate noise louder than acceptable limits. Noise is a
serious workplace hazard that occurs frequently in this
sector and effective controls are essential to prevent
long term effects.
Repeated or continuous exposure to loud noise can
lead to permanent tinnitus and/or hearing loss. Noise
can disrupt communication and concentration, mask
important warning sounds, and potentially lead to
incidents and injuries. Physical and psychological
stress caused by noise can also lead to a decrease in
productivity.
Hearing protection is not the only solution. Appropriate
protective measures and controls can be determined by
completing a noise level assessment in the workplace. A
comprehensive hearing conservation program includes
regular monitoring of noise levels, educating workers
and supervisors, and conducting audiometric testing to
monitor workers' health over time.
