2025 USE CASE Smart Farming for Herbal Excellence: CSIR-CIMAP's Mentha Arvensis Success Mentha arvensis (a species of mint used for medicinal and aromatic purposes) requires careful management of soil moisture to produce high-quality essential oil. Researchers at the CSIR-Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (CIMAP) in Lucknow cultivated Mentha on experimental plots. The site lacked automated monitoring, so scientists relied on manual measurement of soil moisture and manual irrigation. OUTCOMES The deployment of IrrigoSmart® (EnthuTech's LoRaWAN- enabled soil temperature and moisture-based precision irrigation solution) has delivered significant results: • Improved Plant Growth: Moisture-led irrigation boosted Mentha growth across all plots. • Enhanced Crop Quality: Targeted water delivery improved Mentha yield and essential oil concentration. • Reduced Manual Labor: Automated monitoring cut manual work by 70%. • Optimized Water Use: Plot-wise tracking enabled precise water management SITUATION CSIR-CIMAP scientists wanted to understand plant phenology and optimize irrigation for Mentha arvensis. To do this they needed reliable, real-time soil temperature and moisture data and a way to irrigate each plot according to its specific needs. ISSUE The existing process was labor-intensive and error-prone. Each plot had to be checked manually for moisture and irrigated manually, delaying experiments and causing inconsistent data. Manual recording led to data errors and inconsistency, and there was no real-time field data for research optimization. SOLUTION To address these challenges, a comprehensive soil moisture monitoring and irrigation optimization system was implemented: • Soil Moisture, Temperature and Moisture Monitoring: Sensors in plots provided consistent, real-time moisture readings. • Plot-Level Precision Irrigation System: Water application was aligned with actual soil conditions for each plot. • Efficient Research Operations: Automated measurement tasks reduced staff effort and improved operational efficiency. • Centralized Monitoring Platform: Our thingZmate® platform enabled live tracking of moisture levels, optimizing irrigation scheduling.
